PRESS RELEASE: 2020 Tofino Saltwater Classic Cancelled

Tofino Saltwater Classic Fundraiser Fishing Derby Cancelled for 2020

Event’s Legacy to Be Supported With New Donation and Contribution Options

Tofino, British Columbia, Canada, May 30, 2020–  The Tofino Saltwater Classic fundraiser, which has netted more than $575,000 to support a variety of Tofino community, youth, and salmon enhancement initiatives, today announced that its 2020 event will be cancelled due to Covid‑19 restrictions.

“The decision to move forward with the event or cancel it until next year has been extremely difficult and one not taken lightly.  It has weighed on my conscience for weeks,” said Tofino Saltwater Classic founder, Brendan Morrison.  “Due to the current circumstances pertaining to the COVID 19 pandemic, however, the Tofino Saltwater Classic will be placed on the ‘long term injury reserve’ list (hockey term!) for 2020 and will return again in 2021.”

Anglers who have already registered for the event can request to have their entry fees refunded minus a small service charge by following the directions in their confirmation email from Eventbrite.

Registrants and supporters of the Tofino Saltwater Classic also have a number of options that would help to keep the event’s legacy alive until the 2021 event by providing funding to the initiatives that have been supported in the past. Those options include:

1.     TICKET HOLD FOR NEXT YEAR: The Tofino Saltwater Classic will hold onto an already registered participant’s 2020 entry fee and apply it to next year’s derby entry fee.

2.     DONATE PAID FOR TICKET: Registered anglers may donate their entry fee to the derby’s beneficiaries this year by emailing tofinoswc@gmail.com with a request to “donate my ticket.”

3.     OTHER DONATIONS:  Supporters who wish to make a Tofino Saltwater Classic donation of any amount can do so by purchasing a “Donation” ticket at the organization’s Eventbrite page: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/tofino-saltwater-classic-2020-tickets-88727419099?aff=erelexpmlt.
