5th Annual Tofino Saltwater Classic Fishing Derby Raises
Additional $55,000 for Community Initiatives

Tofino's Largest Fundraiser's To-date Contributions Exceed $185,000

Tofino, British Columbia, Canada, July 11, 2014 – Former National Hockey League (NHL) player Brendan Morrison today announced that the recent Tofino Saltwater Classic Fishing Derby fundraiser event, held for the fifth consecutive year in Tofino on the west coast of Vancouver Island, netted a record $55,000 —bringing the total amount raised for local community initiatives since the event's inception to more than $185,000.

This year's Tofino Saltwater Classic beneficiaries are:

• The Wickaninnish Community School WEPAC Healthy Food and Scholastic Programs
• Wickaninnish Community School Society After School Care Program
• Tofino Hospital Foundation
• Tofino Parks and Recreation Commission
• Tofino Salmon Enhancement Society
• West Coast Multiplex Society
• Tofino Legion Youth Night Program

"The generosity of our derby's participants and supporters is truly inspiring," said Tofino Saltwater Classic Fishing Derby host, Brendan Morrison. "Tofino is a great place to live, work and fish and I am very pleased to be able to help support such a great community in a meaningful way."

125 anglers participated in the 2014 Tofino Saltwater Classic with the following winners and prizes:
Top Chinook (29.7 pounds): Kary Cuthill - Prize $6,000
2nd Place Chinook (29.1 pounds): Sean Hart - Prize $3,000
3rd Place Chinook (25.3 pounds): Duncan Armitage - Prize $2,000
Top Coho (6.8 pounds): Colin Marshall - Prize $1,500
Top Halibut (hidden weight 12.6 pounds): Matt Thornton - Prize $1,500

"The Saltwater Classic is by far the largest fundraiser in Tofino and has made a number of important community programs possible," said Tofino Mayor, Josie Osborne. "Mr. Morrison's enthusiasm and the continued support from Tofino Saltwater Classic participants, volunteers and donators is much appreciated."

In addition to participant registration fees, the Tofino Saltwater Classic raised funds at a silent auction and by private donations from Tofino residents and business owners from around the province.

The Tofino Saltwater Classic 2015 will be held on July 4 and 5.
